PHI Participates in Gray Panthers Forum on Caregiving

June 7, 2016

The New York chapter of the Gray Panthers recently released its summary report (pdf) on a caregiving forum held on April 27.

A panel of speakers, including PHI New York Policy Associate Allison Cook, discussed the important issues surrounding paid and unpaid caregiving in New York City.

Cook summarized many issues facing home health aides and personal care aides by discussing challenges relating to wages and benefits, career advancement opportunities, and better training.

She then discussed potential policy solutions, such as creating an Advanced Home Health Aide occupation in New York State and passing the proposed bill to create a Division of Paid Care in New York City.

“Improving job quality and supports for home care aides in a way that fully acknowledges the value of their work affects the whole system, often resulting in improved quality of care and quality of life for those receiving care and for family caregivers,” Cook concluded.
