Direct care workers’ response to dying and death in the nursing home: A case study

January 1, 2004

Journal of Gerontology: Social Sciences Vol. 60B, No. 1

This article discusses the correlation between direct-care workers’ life experiences, cultural and spiritual beliefs, and approach to caregiving. Information gathered from interviews, conversations, and on-site observations led the authors to focus on one case study to explore a worker’s beliefs and approach to residents as they go through the dying process. Further, the article discusses how administrative staff’s infrequent personal interaction with residents affect direct-care workers’ perception of, and commitment to, the job.
