Author Thomas Edward Gass worked in a nursing home for three-and-a-half years and eventually became its director of social services, but his book focuses on what he experienced as a nursing assistant because, as he writes, those experiences were “by far more interesting.” He shares his experiences and the thoughts they spurred in him, capturing the complexity of life and frontline work in what sounds like a fairly typical nursing home.
