Washington Post Publishes PHI Letter on Overtime for Home Care Workers

July 6, 2015

Extending basic wage protections to home care workers would lead to better quality care for consumers, PHI President Jodi Sturgeon wrote in a letter to the Washington Post published on July 3.

The letter was a response to a July 1 article about President Obama‘s recent move to extend overtime pay protections to more salaried workers by changing the eligibility qualifications.

Sturgeon writes that the Obama administration has similarly attempted to extend both minimum wage and overtime protections to home care workers under the Fair Labor Standards Act, which specifically excludes such workers.

That effort, which PHI has worked to support for several years, is currently stalled in federal court due to legal challenges from the home care industry.
